Twenty years ago, Jacqualine Timms lost everything. A traumatic marriage that took more than she knew she had to give. Obstacles that arrived one after another with no relief in between. A moment — or rather a period of many moments — where she found herself at the very bottom. In the gutters, as she calls it. With no income, no clear future, and no road forward that made any sense.

A handful of extraordinary friends held her hand through the worst of it. They showed up. They stayed. And she will be grateful for them for the rest of her life.

But the rising — the actual getting back up — that was hers to do alone.

Of believing in something she could not yet see. Of holding onto four words that arrived in a moment of absolute stillness — sitting alone, with nothing:

The phoenix rises from the ashes. Not because conditions are perfect. Not because someone rescued it. It rises because it made a choice. Because somewhere beneath the wreckage, there was still something worth saving — and it chose to believe that.
